If you don’t have a ring sizer or a reference ring, using a strip of paper is one of the simplest ways to measure your ring size at home. All you need is a strip of paper, a pen, and a ruler to measure your finger’s circumference and find the right size.

Paper, pen
Step 5: Determine your ring size
Use the measurement to check your ring size. You can input it into the calculator below to get a US size or consult the circumference conversion table for UK, EU, or other standards.
This calculator is based on the ISO 8653:2016 standard, which defines ring sizes by their inner circumference in millimeters, ensuring accurate and consistent measurement.
Measuring finger size with large knuckles
Measure both the knuckle and the base of your finger
If the difference between the knuckle and the base is small (around 2 mm or less), it’s usually best to go with the base size. The ring may require a bit of pressure to slide over the knuckle, but once on, it will fit more securely and feel more natural at the base.
If the difference is larger, consider choosing a size in between. A knuckle can often accommodate a ring one or two sizes smaller than its own measurement, so selecting the midpoint offers a good balance. For engagement rings or valuable pieces, a jeweler can make fine adjustments using sizing beads, butterfly springs, or hinged shanks.
Can I use string or tape to size my finger?
Paper is more precise, but other tools can work
We recommend using a thin strip of paper because it allows for a more precise and visible mark, especially when using a fine-tip pen. However, if you don’t have access to paper, a piece of string can also work—as long as it’s not elastic and doesn’t absorb ink easily (which could blur the mark and affect accuracy). Try to keep it tight and mark carefully to get an accurate reading.
Flexible measuring tapes (like sewing tapes) are also acceptable, though their width can make it harder to wrap precisely around the finger. Avoid using metallic or rigid tapes, as they don’t conform well to the shape of the finger and can lead to inaccurate results.
Frequently asked questions measuring your finger
If your measurement falls between two sizes, consider the ring’s interior shape and width. Comfort fit rings tend to feel looser, so the smaller size might be a better match. Standard flat rings make more contact with the finger, so the larger size could feel better. Also think about width: wide bands usually fit tighter, so choosing the larger option is often more comfortable. For slim styles like engagement or wedding rings, the smaller size may provide a better fit.
For the most accurate measurement, it’s best to measure when your hands are relaxed and at a normal temperature, typically in the afternoon or evening. Avoid measuring just after waking up, exercising, or showering, since these can temporarily affect finger size.
